The City is continuing its initiative to honor veterans with the planting of Veterans Memorial trees at a new location. With the current location having been filled years ago, Mayor Dunbar decided it was time to find a new spot to plant these trees. “Some people have been on a waiting list for over 10 years. It’s time that we move forward to honor their loved ones.”, Mayor Dunbar was quoted saying.
The new location for these trees will be at the recently completed Putnam County YMCA, 1111 Calbert Way, Greencastle. The city wishes to plant roughly 100 trees surrounding the facility, each one in memory of a veteran who served our county. Citizens will have an opportunity to “purchase a tree” in memory of a loved one, creating a lasting tribute to their service, courage, and patriotism . The cost to purchase a tree is $200, which includes a marker bearing the veteran's name and branch of service, planting, and ongoing maintenance. Families are welcome to purchase more than one tree for each veteran. The program is open to anyone, and veterans do not need to be residents of the City of Greencastle to be honored.
The City is excited about the opening of this new memorial, and believes it will cultivate a space for reflection and learning for future generations. Individuals who are interested in purchasing a tree may contact the Mayor’s office at 765-848-1515, or e-mail ahiatt@cityofgreencastle.com to have an application emailed to them. They may also pick one up in person from the Utility Office at City Hall, located at 1 N. Locust St. Completed applications should be returned to the Clerk-Treasurer’s office, where payment will be taken. Payment may be made in the form of cash, check, or card.
