Trash & Recycling

The City of Greencastle has contracted with Republic Services, Inc. to offer curbside trash and recycling services for households in our city.

Trash and Recycling Customer Service

Call the City Utility Office at 765-653-2638 for the following:

  • To establish or end trash and recycling service.
  • Missed trash or recycling pick-ups.
  • To add or remove a second recycling or trash toter (Additional fee of $5/month)
  • To have a damaged toter replaced.
  • To ask billing or payment questions.

Recycling

Your recycling toter can be used to recycle the following types of household waste. All materials should be rinsed, and clean, and should not be soiled so as to be unusable.

  • Newspapers, Colored and White Paper, Magazines, Catalogs, Junk Mail, Paper Bags and Phone Books. Do not include shredded paper.
  • Lightweight Cardboard - such as cereal boxes. Do not recycle wax or plastic-coated cardboard food containers.
  • Corrugated Cardboard - please break down the boxes. Do not recycle pizza boxes or other boxes that are contaminated with grease or food.
  • Aluminum, Steel, and Tin Cans - Beverage, cat food, soup, coffee cans, etc.
  • Plastic Containers:
    • Number 1 - PET or PETE including soda bottles, water bottles, cooking oil bottles, peanut butter jars, and medicine containers. No microwave trays.
    • Number 2 - HDPE including laundry and dish detergent containers, milk bottles, butter and margarine tubs, shampoo and conditioner bottles. Updated May 5, 2022, Page 2 of 6
    • Number 5 - PP including yogurt tubs, orange prescription medicine containers, and other food containers.
  • Glass - Glass requires special handling. Glass containers should not be placed in the recycling toters. Glass typically breaks during pick-up and handling which contaminates other recycling items such as paper and cardboard. Clean glass can be recycled at Republic's drop-off site at 525 West Columbia Street. The site is open 8 Am to 4 PM. Monday through Friday.

The following plastic items are not recyclable:

  • Number 2 - HDPE grocery bags, plastic bags, and plastic films.
  • Number 3 - All PVC including some containers, shower curtains, or plastic films.
  • Number 4 - LDPE including CD and DVD cases, liquid and food containers, grocery bags, plastic bags, and plastic films.
  • Number 6 - Styrofoam/PS including hard plastic cups, hard plastic containers, disposable cutlery, and all Styrofoam/foam containers and cups, is not recyclable at this time; place in your regular trash.
  • Number 7 - Other including clear polycarbonate water bottles.
  • No Number - Plastic items with no recycling number.

The largest plastic container that can be recycled is a 5-gallon bucket. All items can be mixed together in your designated recycling toter. Recycling is picked up every other week. Please place your toter at the curb with the hinge side of the lid away from the curb.

Republic Services sorts recycling items using an automated system with conveyor belts. The following guidelines are important to generate a quality stream of recycling materials that can be sold in the marketplace for inclusion in new products. When in doubt, throw it out in the regular trash.

Additional Recycling Services

Additional recycling services are offered by the West Central Solid Waste District. The District can provide assistance with batteries, electronic waste, household hazardous waste, tires, and other items. The District also offers a Tox-Away Day each spring. Please watch the local media or consult the District's website for the time and location. Republic Services also offers a recycling drop-off center at their facility on West Columbia Street.
