Through its Redevelopment Commission, the City of Greencastle will break ground on the new Greencastle YMCA this spring. The facility is being built in partnership with the YMCA of the Wabash Valley and the Putnam County Hospital. This project fulfills a multi-decade dream of the community. Located on the east side of Greencastle on South Calbert Way, the site provides easy access for residents of Greencastle and the entire county. The Y will feature 59,725 square feet of recreation space including three basketball/sports courts, three exercise studios, a walking track, a fitness area filled with a wide range of exercise equipment, a child watch area, a teen room, and ample support space such as office space, restrooms, family locker rooms, and storage. The gym spaces are set up to accommodate basketball, volleyball, pickleball, futsal and other programming. The Putnam County Hospital space of 11,270 square feet will allow for a wide range of medical offerings for the community. These services include Putnam Prompt Care which will offer a high-quality, low-cost option to the emergency room. The focus will be on minor illnesses and injuries that need immediate attention. Putnam Occupational Health will support employers and employees to keep everyone working. The office will offer a variety of services to accommodate pre-employment needs, including testing, screening, and physicals, as well as providing care for injuries that may occur while on the job. Rehabilitation services will include physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy. A large community room and teaching kitchen will allow both the Y and hospital to offer a wide range of educational programs. Community groups will also have access to the space to offer programs. The 14 acre site allows for plenty of parking and outdoor recreation area. The project is expected to serve families from across Putnam County with over 50,000 visits expected each year. Services will be offered for a wide range of age groups from children to seniors. For Families – Safe and affordable after school childcare, reduction in learning loss in their children through participation in summer day camp, and the ability to share quality time doing fun activities. For Children – Kids can play in a safe, healthy, and active environment. Programs will let kids explore interests and gain self-confidence by participating in classes, summer camps, and sports. For Seniors – Seniors can stay active with exercise programs, an indoor walking track, pickleball, educational programs and most of all, social interaction and a sense of community. For Everyone – Even if you can’t workout or are already in great shape, everyone benefits from wellness services and activities that can strengthen mental, physical, and social well-being. Construction will take about fifteen to sixteen months depending on weather and any supply chain issues. The project is expected to open in the summer of 2024. Unique to this project is a fund-raising effort to provide start up costs for the Y and a long-term operating endowment. This fund-raising effort has received substantial support from the Putnam County Community Foundation with a matching grant of $500,000. Fund raising is underway and progress announcements will be forthcoming.
